Unbelievable Wanaka Escape: West Meadows Motel Awaits!
Okay, buckle up buttercups, because we’re diving headfirst into the Unbelievable Wanaka Escape: West Meadows Motel Awaits! And believe me, after my stay (or should I say, my adventure?), I've got a story to tell. This isn't just a review, it's a vibe-check. Buckle up.
Accessibility – A (Mostly) Smooth Ride:
Okay, let’s start with the important stuff. I'm not in a wheelchair myself, but I always look for accessibility because inclusivity is crucial. And listen, West Meadows is trying. They've got facilities for disabled guests, which is a huge plus. The elevator is a godsend (especially after… well, you'll see). I didn't specifically test the ramps, but everything seemed well-considered. The exterior corridor concept is a plus as well for accessibility.
Cleanliness and Safety – Sanitized? Check. Obsessed? Maybe.
Look, in today's world, cleanliness is everything. And West Meadows? They're on it. They've got all the buzzwords: Anti-viral cleaning products, professional-grade sanitizing services, daily disinfection in common areas. They even have individually-wrapped food options (which, honestly, felt a little like operating room rations, but hey, safety first). Rooms sanitized between stays is a given, and they even gave you the room sanitization opt-out available if you were that brave. The biggest thing? I felt safe. Like, genuinely. The doctor/nurse on call adds a layer of comfort, as did the CCTV in common areas and outside property.
Here's a little anecdote, and this is the kind of thing you ONLY get from an honest review: I may have accidentally dropped a rogue crumb on the floor. And the next morning, it was GONE. Poof! Like a magician had waved their wand. Now, was it the cleaning crew, or did the staff actually hunt down that crumb? I will NEVER know, but it made me slightly paranoid and incredibly impressed by their dedication.
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking – Food Glorious (and Sometimes Questionable) Food:
Alright, foodies, let's get real. The restaurants situation is a little… scattered, and this is where things get real. They have Asian breakfast, Asian cuisine in restaurant, international cuisine in restaurant, an A la carte in restaurant, and a buffet in restaurant, as well as western breakfast and western cuisine in restaurant. All sounds great right, but then there's a salad in restaurant, and soup in restaurant, and a desserts in restaurant. I'm not sure if that means one restaurant, or a bunch of places. The coffee/tea in restaurant was a good thing, I needed a lot of it after the aforementioned… crumb incident. There's a poolside bar which sounds lovely, and maybe there's a snack bar. I didn't see it, but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. The happy hour is definitely something I would have liked to take advantage of. The bar I suspect is the same one as the Poolside bar. But still, a good sign!
They also did a fantastic job of the breakfast [buffet]. The coffee was hot, the bacon was crispy, and the fresh fruit was… well, let's just say I may have filled a plate or two.
They offer breakfast in room and breakfast takeaway service. I did not have a Bottle of water at all times, which is something I really need.
Things to Do & Ways to Relax – Spa Dreams & Fitness Fumbles:
This is where West Meadows surprises. They've got it all, or at least some of it all. The pool with view is the main draw. Seriously, the view is stunning. I sat there, margarita in hand (thanks, poolside bar) and just… breathed. It was heaven.
Then there's the spa. Now, I'm a sucker for a good spa. They have a Spa, spa/sauna, massage, sauna, steam room, body scrub, body wrap, foot bath - you name it, they probably have it.
Their Fitness center is a different story. Let me just say, it’s…well-equipped, with all the basics (and a few things I had no idea how to use). I'll be honest, I spent more time admiring the view from the treadmill than actually working out. Still, points for effort!
Rooms – Comfort & (Potentially) Questionable Decor:
The rooms are where West Meadows really shines. My room? It was like a cozy little sanctuary. The air conditioning was a lifesaver. And the blackout curtains? Genius. I slept like a log. They had the internet access – wireless, which was great, although the speeds weren't lightning-fast. However, let me tell you about the extra long bed! It was heavenly. Seriously, I'm 6'2" and I didn't even have to curl up in the fetal position! The complimentary tea and free bottled water were little touches that made a big difference. They even had bathrobes and slippers. Talk about decadence!
The furniture was… let's call it "eclectic." There was a charming antique-y feel. And the lighting…oh, the lighting. But hey, the essentials were there.
They also offered non-smoking rooms, which is a plus.
Services & Conveniences – A Little Bit of Everything:
They offer tons of services! They definitely want to make your stay as easy as possible. They had a concierge to help me out, a daily housekeeping service that was on point, and a laundry service, which was a lifesaver. I'd say car park [free of charge] is the best thing, but the air conditioning in public areas is close behind. However, not all of them were available.
For the Kids – Babysitters and More!
I don't have kids, but I did notice the emphasis on families. They have Babysitting service, family/child friendly, and kids facilities, which is great.
Getting Around – Easy Peasy:
They had airport transfer which came in handy. Getting around was pretty easy. There's plenty of car park [on-site] which is free!
Here's My Unvarnished Take (and why you should book!):
Okay, so West Meadows isn't perfect. It's a little quirky, a little rough around the edges. But that's what makes it charming. It's got heart. It's got a stunning view, comfortable rooms, and a staff that genuinely cares. The cleanliness is top-notch, and the amenities are plentiful.
So, here's the deal:
Book West Meadows if:
- You want an escape – a place to truly recharge.
- You appreciate stunning views and a relaxed atmosphere.
- You value cleanliness and safety above all else.
- You're not afraid of a little quirky charm.
- You appreciate extra long beds!
- You want to get away from it all and actually get away from it all.
- You want somewhere to crash for a few nights, without breaking the bank, and where you'll feel refreshed and relaxed.
Steer clear if:
- You demand absolute perfection.
- You're easily bothered by a slightly dated decor.
- You need a Michelin-star restaurant on-site. (although if you're willing to drive, there are some spectacular restaurants nearby!).
My Final Verdict:
I had a fantastic stay at Unbelievable Wanaka Escape: West Meadows Motel Awaits!, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It's a place that grows on you. It's a place you'll remember. It's a place you'll want to return to. Go. Book it. You won't regret it.
Kunming Getaway: Jinjiang Inn Select Hotel Review (Near Kunming College!)
Alright, buckle up buttercups, because this isn't your perfectly filtered Instagram travel guide. This is the REAL DEAL: a West Meadows Motel Wanaka itinerary, by a human, for humans. And trust me, we're gonna have a time.
Day 1: Arrival and the "Oh, This is Wanaka" Feeling
- 13:00 - Arrival at West Meadows Motel: Okay, so the drive from Queenstown? Absolutely stunning. Jaw-dropping. Made me briefly consider becoming a landscape photographer (that lasted about five minutes). But the GPS? Bless its little digital heart, it tried to take me on a gravel road that looked suspiciously like the entrance to a serial killer's lair. Shudders. Finally made it, parked the car (which, by the way, needs a serious wash), and checked in. The woman at the front desk was ridiculously cheerful, which, after the near-death GPS experience, was a bit unsettling. Gave me the key. Room… alright. Kinda like your grandma's guest room, but clean. And hey, a kitchenette! Coffee time.
- 13:30 - Coffee Debacle & the First Impression: Alright, so the coffee situation. The instant coffee in the room was… well, let's just say it wasn't going to win any awards. I am a coffee person. A serious coffee person. The initial sip? Ugh. I briefly contemplated abandoning the motel and just moving into the nearest cafe permanently. But I was tired, the view from my room was kinda alright… So, I soldiered on. Got my butt in gear and got myself a Proper coffee. A proper coffee. I swear, that first sip felt like a warm hug. And looking out the window, I realized that I had made it. This was Wanaka, for better or worse.
- 14:00 - Lake Wanaka – The Initial Gaze! I feel like I've seen pictures of this lake since I was a child, and it's beautiful in photos. The real thing? HOLY MOLY. Seriously. I just stood there, mouth agape, staring at the water rippling in the breeze. The mountains in the background were like a movie set, but real. I think I might have shed a tiny, pathetic tear. This is why I travel, people. This is what it's all about.
- 15:00 - The Wanaka Tree (and the Crowd): Yep, the famous Wanaka Tree. You've seen the photos, right? It's a tree, partially submerged in the lake. It's beautiful. BUT. Holy mother of tourists, it was a scrummage. People were practically fighting for the perfect Instagram shot. I managed to squeeze in a quick pic, but I’m not going to lie, I got a little annoyed. The serenity was definitely challenged. Decided to retreat and let the influencers have their moment.
- 16:00 - Local Grocery Store and Snack Acquisition: Hunger pangs are kicking in. Time to explore the local grocery store. I grabbed some snacks – Kiwi lollies (they're surprisingly addictive), some locally made cheese, and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. (Because, priorities).
- 17:00 - Relaxing at the Motel: Back at the motel, finally. Cracking open the bottle of wine, settling on the balcony. The sun is starting to dip behind the mountains. This is what I came for. This is bliss. Despite the slightly dodgy coffee and the Instagram-obsessed hordes, I'm feeling alright.
Day 2: "Things I Tried to Do and Mostly Succeeded (or Barely Survived)"
- 08:00 - Attempted Hike: The plan: A brisk morning hike. The reality: I woke up, stared at the ceiling for a solid hour, and then dragged myself out of bed. The trail I chose turned out to be slightly more challenging than the brochure suggested. Lots of uphill. Lots of panting. Lots of feeling like I was going to die. The views from the top, though? Worth it. Just worth it.
- 10:00 - Coffee and the Great Adventure!!: The coffee situation had improved. There was a café down the street. I walked over there and ordered a double-shot espresso. I sat down with my beverage and took a big sip. It was perfect. I smiled at the view while I planned my next adventure. Maybe I would go paragliding over Lake Wanaka. I was excited, and I went back to the room to change.
- 11:00 - The Paragliding Adventure: Paragliding over Lake Wanaka was an experience. It was thrilling, it was terrifying, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The views… you know what, I'm going to stop using the word "breathtaking" because it's overused. But seriously, the views were amazing. I wanted to document it, but my phone wouldn't stop falling out of my pocket. It was cold, but I didn't mind.
- 13:00 - A Late Lunch: Okay, so I'm still buzzing from the paragliding. Found this little café in town that makes incredible sandwiches. Devoured it. Then ordered a second one. Don't judge me.
- 14:00 - That Afternoon Nap: Ah, the ultimate luxury. After the paragliding and the sandwiches, I was properly exhausted. Back to the motel for a power nap. I set an alarm, of course, but woke up two hours later, feeling a bit fuzzy-headed, but refreshed.
- 16:00 - The Cinema Paradiso Experience: Okay, so I should have booked in advance. I did not. It was sold out. Epic fail. I did, however, peek through the windows and saw the outdoor cinema. Another perfect day.
- 19:00 - Dinner and Wine Time: Finding a good restaurant in Wanaka is easy. But finding a good restaurant that isn't overflowing with tourists? Tricky. I managed to snag a table at a cozy place serving up local lamb. Delicious. Followed by more Sauvignon Blanc. Because, you know, priorities.
Day 3: Departure and The Lingering Feeling of "I Need To Come Back"
- 09:00 - One Last Coffee, One Last View: Woke up to a gloriously sunny morning. Made myself a terrible coffee (still haven't mastered that instant coffee situation) and sat on the balcony, soaking in the last of the Wanaka views. This is going to be hard to leave.
- 10:00 - Wandering: I went on a lovely walk to the waterfront.
- 11:00 - Packing and Departure: Okay, time to get my act together. Packing is always a disaster. I'm pretty sure I'm leaving half my stuff behind. Check out time. Cheerful, slightly unnerving woman at the front desk again.
- 12:00 - Goodbye Wanaka: The drive out of Wanaka. Goodbye, stunning scenery, quirky cafes, and the slightly annoying tourists. It's a bittersweet farewell. I'm already planning my return.
Post-Trip Ramblings:
- I'm now convinced that New Zealand has something in the water. Everyone is ridiculously friendly. And fit. And beautiful. It's enough to make you question your life choices.
- The West Meadows Motel? It's not the Ritz, but it's clean, convenient, and the view from the balcony makes up for the dodgy coffee.
- I didn't become a landscape photographer. But I did take a ridiculous number of photos. And I wouldn't change a thing.
- Wanaka, you absolute gem. I'll be back. Probably with better coffee next time. And maybe a bigger suitcase.

West Meadows Motel FAQ - Where the Adventure REALLY Begins (Maybe?)
Okay, so... West Meadows. Sounded idyllic, right? Is it? REALLY?
My biggest peeve? That weird clicking sound the ancient fridge made. Kept thinking something was *about* to explode. Seriously, every time it clicked, I jumped. But yeah, idyllic? Not exactly. Functional? Absolutely. Did I sleep? You betcha. Did I get to see the mountains? Absolutely. Did I enjoy some coffee? Probably. (Okay, I did, mostly.)
What's the deal with the "unbelievable" part? Is this clickbait?
Let's be honest, sometimes, the *unbelievable* part isn't the luxury; it's the unexpected joy you find in the simplicity. Like stumbling on an amazing pie shop a block away. Pure gold.
Seriously, the rooms. What are they *actually* like?
But oh man, the *space*. I'm a bit of a space person, I like to breathe. It wasn't a palace by any means, but it didn't feel cramped. Well, unless you were trying to navigate the bathroom. But seriously, you're in Wanaka! You shouldn't be spending all day in your room anyway. Get out and explore!
The location – convenient? Remote? Somewhere in between?
But it's far enough away that you avoid the constant hustle and bustle. Plus, the peace and quiet at night? Gold. Pure, solid gold. Okay, except for that fridge. Still haunted by it.
My advice? Walk to town for dinner, and then walk *back*. Enjoy the crisp air. Soak it all in. You'll see what I mean. Trust me, the peace and quiet has to be experienced.
What about the staff? Friendly? Grumpy? Non-existent? Spill.
One morning I dropped my keys and scrambled around like a fool trying to find them, and there was the lady at the front desk helping me! Made you feel like you were staying at someone's home.
Alright, let's talk value for money. Worth it? Rip off?
If you're looking for five-star luxury? Probably not your jam. But if you want a clean, comfortable basecamp for exploring Wanaka without needing to remortgage your house? Then yes, it's worth it. Consider it a good investment in your Wanaka adventure.
For the price? I was very happy, I'd pay again.
Any must-do activities nearby? Give me the GOLD.
* **Roys Peak Track:** Do it. Just do it. Be prepared to walk uphill... forever. (Fine, not *forever*, but it feels like it.) The views? Unbelievable. The crowds? Predictable. The pain in your legs the next day? Real. Bring water, snacks, and a camera. And maybe a prayer. * **Lake Wanaka Cruising:** Absolutely, and just *breathe* in all the beauty. Take a boat trip on the lake. See the iconic Wanaka Tree. Soak it up. * **Puzzling World:** Okay, you can skip this if you're not into that sort of thing. I loved it, the kids who came in the area seemed to love it, and it's a fun way to spend an hour or two. * **The Pie Shop (yes, I'm obsessed) :** Don't even think about leaving Wanaka without trying at least one piece of pie. Seriously. The meat pies? Amazing. The fruit pies? Heavenly. Did I mention I REALLY liked that pie shop?Explore Hotels
